The Factotum Museum was founded in April 2000. It holds in trust for the nation and the world a collection of objects from ancient and living cultures. As a social enterprise the Factotum Museum has exceptional reach. It creates a context in which cultures can be seen, experienced and studied in depth or compared and contrasted across time and space to inspire and delight. The Museum engages with the public to advance understanding of the collections and cultures they represent.

A PACKET OF JOHNSONS SEEDS CAT GRASS Accession No. 00000001 The West Bequest 9cm x 4cm x .3cm. paper and seeds
spacer
Following the format of other seed packets this product is part of a larger range of seeds for the domestic market. As befits the small scale grower it therefore contains small incentives for the prospective purchaser, including a picture of a cat looming over the fully grown grass and a plastic label that can be attached to the grass to aid identification.

Curator's Report: This item fulfills the main requirements to justify its inclusion in the museum collection: the simple marvel it inspires that society could produce such things as packets of seed to grow for the consumption of domestic cats. One cannot but be impressed by the commercial creativity that would develop such an unexpected market combining both gardening and pet care.

The presentation of the product is entertaining. In place of the usual well lit studio picture of a co-operative plant we have a expressionistic looking digital picture of cat and plant apparently forceably brought into proximity. Presumably intended to show the cat owner that their pet will just love eating this special grass, the result instead suggests this conversion to vegetarianism brings the onset of some kind of cat insanity. Photographing the animal with a flash in a dark room seems particularly ill-advised.

Incidental pleasures in the packaging are the inclusion of the latin classification of the plant beneath common and marketing name 'Cat Grass', demonstrating how scientific rationalism and sentimentality can both be appropriated to the same cause (unless of course 'Avena sativa' means 'grass for cats'). All told this packet of Cat Grass neatly summarizes our relationship with both the plant and animal kingdoms.
