[Factoid: During the eighties The City of Dundee was the directors choice when sourcing locations for films set in Soviet Russia. Check out Letter to Brezhnev and Gorky Park for good shots of the Broon Toon during the Thatcher years.]

There can be no greater example of the inherent conservatism of today's so called anti-globalist 'radical youth' than the soundtrack of choice for their proscribed revolution, so called 'nu metal', intrinsically more conservative then its greasy biker 70's predecessor due to its reliance upon the twin devil structures of desire and commerce (Mammon's Twin Tubs), values that a trio of ugly Brummie brickies named after Greek gods could never hope to match.

The conservatism of the aforementioned youth can be traced to the dispossessed WWII GI's who were unable to stop fighting after VJ day and sought to protect the mythology of their state by forming biker gangs. In the spirit of such American colonialism modern heavy Metallers seek a position as the dark guardians of a conservatism that politically apes the unresolved patricidal fantasies of their spiritual forefathers; for example the recently and tragically deceased figure of the great Ronald Reagan. Praise Yahweh let it not be long until Limp Bizkit release a quadruple LP in quadraphonic sound entitled 'LET'S DO IT FOR THE GIPPER!' Nu-metallers then, as diluted bikers, retain the role of internal security police for the blessed New World Order.

[Factoid: as with Belfast, Dundee's most famous signifiers are negative: The ship (Scott's Discovery) didn't make it, the bridge fell over during a storm and the poet (McGonagall) was shite.]

Indeed the roots of this new conservatism can be traced back to a strain that has spread its evil roots as far, God help us, as this very blighted isle: witness Iron Maiden's masterstroke of patriotic filth The Trooper; Gary Moore may have been up to God knows what with the corpse of Phil Lynott out in fields but even that son of Ballybeen cannot have forseen the extent to which the ultra-conservative roots of NWOBHM would infiltrate our national consciousness. The choice of Derek Rigg's 'Trooper' image by the Maiden for said epochal single can be said to be prescient in respect of the media image adopted by certain prevalent Loyalist groups, concerned as both are with adolescent fantasies of vengeance and retribution, propagated by mama's boys (none more metal) suffering from an Oedipal complex that reduces all the Lord's beautiful imprecations to an adolescent sex 'n' violence fantasy of warring tribes and arcane mythology.

[Factoid: Dundee is also where the KKK originated]

And now the fundamentalist (with the emphasis on the mentalist) roots of the lovely Tina Turner's Simply The Best can finally be exposed; and it had previously been assumed that a certain team of local 'football' exponents had adopted said tune as an avatar of their excellence. Perhaps the true roots of their patronage can be found in the song's neo-conservative roots, bringing together the eternal Metaller image of futuristic Hell's Angels ruled by a biker chick with the teutonic triumphalist dogma exemplified by the adoption of skinhead icon Dunk, one of the original Weetabix gang, as a Billy-Boy painted on a community mural off Ravenhill Road. So here we find the evil congruence between old and neo conservatism, where all roads lead to the unholy shrine of Dubya, entombed as he is in the Twin Tubs of Mammon. There can be no doubt that the interest of the stoned gap-year nu-metal classes in anti Bush-activism has as much to do with relief that the international stereotype for imperialism has shifted from the Victorian English to the American than any natural inclination towards alternative politics. Just ask John-Rhys Davies.
